Each card covers what the option helps with, who it’s for, and your next step.
1 · Find a providerFind a family doctor or primary care provider
Quebec uses the GAMF waiting list to match residents with a family doctor and the GAP (Guichet d’accès à la première ligne) to help unattached patients access care in the meantime.
Who it’s for: Quebec residents without a family doctor or nurse practitioner.
Next step: Register with Québec Family Doctor Finder (GAMF) (or call 8-1-1) and keep your details current.
2 · Health adviceCall a health advice line
Dialing 8-1-1 in Quebec reaches Info-Santé (option 1) for 24/7 nursing advice and Info-Social (option 2) for 24/7 psychosocial support. A primary care access option is also available through 8-1-1.
Who it’s for: Anyone with a non-emergency health question, or unsure where to go for care.
Next step: Save the number and call before heading to a clinic when you’re not sure what you need. In an emergency, call 911.
3 · Community supportsSearch community supports through 211
211 is a free, confidential service that connects people to community, social and government services across Canada, including Quebec.
Who it’s for: Anyone who needs help beyond a doctor’s visit — food, housing, seniors’ supports, newcomer services and more.
Next step: Call 2-1-1 where available or search the online directory at 211.ca.
4 · Regional resourcesCheck regional health resources
Quebec’s public network is organized into regional CISSS and CIUSSS organizations that run hospitals, CLSCs and community services in each territory.
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants to know what clinics and services operate in their own region.
Next step: Browse the official regional pages and note clinics, health centres and programs near you.
5 · Team-based careLook for community or team-based care
CLSCs (local community services centres) provide front-line health and social services across Quebec, and family medicine groups (GMFs) offer team-based care. Contact your local CLSC or use 8-1-1 to find options.
Who it’s for: People who need care while waiting for a permanent provider.
Next step: Confirm hours, eligibility and whether appointments or walk-ins are offered before you go.
6 · Stay organizedTrack clinics and follow up
Doctor availability changes often. People who keep a simple call log — who they called, when, and what they were told — are better positioned when spots open up.
Who it’s for: Everyone actively searching.
Next step: Use the checklist and tracking template further down this page, and re-check clinics every few weeks.
