New to Montreal: what should I ask when calling a clinic?

Montreal, Quebec · Newcomer questions

FADC editorial guidance

New to Montréal? Ask what you are booking before sending personal documents

Use the first call to clarify the service, eligibility and next step. A walk-in visit, a GAP appointment and registration for ongoing care are not interchangeable.

What the official guidance says Québec’s newcomer guidance distinguishes finding a regular provider from accessing a consultation. GAP is an official navigation route, and GAMF is the family-doctor waiting list. Québec: settle and integrate Québec: Primary Care Access Point (GAP)

What still needs checking We have not checked any clinic’s current intake, language availability, fees or your individual coverage. Ask the clinic and the relevant official service before relying on those details.

Your next steps + a ready-to-use question
  1. Ask whether the clinic offers a one-time consultation or registration for ongoing care.
  2. Confirm its booking method, any eligibility requirements, language support and possible charges before attending.
  3. Ask which documents are required and use only the clinic’s verified private channel—not the public discussion—to provide them.
A question you can use

I am new to Montréal. Is this a one-time appointment or ongoing care? How do I book, what documents are required, and are there any charges or eligibility conditions I should confirm first?

A separate FADC navigation note, not a member reply or a clinic confirmation. General information, not medical advice. Share only non-identifying details in the public conversation; keep health information and documents private.

I found it useful to keep a dated list of every clinic or program contacted, including whether the answer was accepting, waitlist or not accepting.

Ask whether the clinic accepts online forms, phone intake or both, and when the information was last updated.

Do not include private health information, phone numbers, emails or health card details.
