The household income dial

GIS is not one flat payment for every senior. Turn four inputs—age and OAS status, household situation, income, and tax-filing timing—and the result changes. This guide shows what each input controls and how to protect the next payment cycle.

Input 1Age 65 or older
Input 2Receiving OAS
Input 3Household status
Input 4Prior-year income

The Guaranteed Income Supplement, usually called GIS, is a monthly, tax-free benefit for eligible low-income Old Age Security pensioners. It is paid with OAS, not as a separate deposit. Service Canada may enrol you automatically when it has the information it needs. If it does not, you may have to apply. Your actual amount depends on your circumstances and can change after the annual review.

Set the eligibility dial first

Start with the basic conditions. In general, you must be 65 or older, receive the OAS pension, live in Canada and have income below the threshold for your household category. Immigration sponsorship rules and periods spent outside Canada can affect eligibility, so people with recent immigration, sponsorship or extended absence should use the official eligibility page or contact Service Canada for a decision based on their facts.

GIS is income-tested. For a single, divorced or widowed person, Service Canada looks at that person’s annual income. For someone with a spouse or common-law partner, it generally uses the couple’s combined income and a threshold that depends on whether the partner receives OAS, receives the Allowance, or receives neither. The OAS pension itself is not counted in the GIS income threshold displayed by Service Canada, but other income can be.

Single, divorced or widowed

For July through September 2026, annual income must be less than $22,800.

Up to $1,123.17 per month

Partner receives full OAS

Combined annual income must be less than $30,096.

Up to $676.09 per month

Partner receives the Allowance

Combined annual income must be less than $42,144.

Up to $676.09 per month

Partner receives neither OAS nor Allowance

Combined annual income must be less than $54,624.

Up to $1,123.17 per month

These are maximums and cut-offs for the July-to-September 2026 quarter, not promises of an individual payment. Benefits are reviewed quarterly for cost-of-living changes and do not decrease when the measured cost of living falls. The official page says maximums are not guaranteed; income and household status determine the amount actually paid.

Read the thresholds without making the common mistake

What the number means What it does not mean Your next check
A household-category income ceiling used for GIS eligibility. It is not a promise that everyone below it receives the maximum. Use the OAS Benefits Estimator or contact Service Canada for an estimate.
A maximum monthly amount for the current quarter. It is not the sum of GIS and OAS, and it may not be your amount. Compare your notice and bank deposit with the official current table.
Income is normally drawn from the prior tax year. A sharp current-year income drop is not always something you must wait a full year to report. Ask Service Canada whether an estimate of current-year income can be used.

A frequent error is comparing gross household cash flow with a single line from the table and declaring yourself eligible or ineligible. Service Canada’s calculation has specific income rules and couple categories. Use the table as a screening tool, then use the official estimator or speak with Service Canada, especially when there is employment income, pension income, self-employment, a separation, a recent retirement or a change in marital status.

Know when 2026 payments arrive

GIS is included in your monthly OAS payment. The remaining scheduled OAS and GIS payment dates for 2026 are:

September 252026
October 282026
November 262026
December 222026

Direct deposit timing can depend on your financial institution. If the payment does not appear when expected, confirm the official date, check your My Service Canada Account and contact Service Canada. Do not share a social insurance number, banking details or account password with someone who approaches you unexpectedly and offers to “release” a benefit.

How automatic enrolment and an application differ

Service Canada says most people can be automatically enrolled for GIS when sufficient information is available. It will tell you by mail. If one month has passed since your 64th birthday and you have not received an enrolment letter, contact Service Canada to find out whether you need to apply. Do not wait until after your 65th birthday to investigate a missing notice.

If an application is required, the official form is the Application for the Guaranteed Income Supplement or Statement of Income for the Allowance or Allowance for the Survivor, form ISP-3025. The information needed can include your social insurance number, marital status, partner information and income. Follow the current form instructions and send documents through an authorized channel.

A person you authorize to communicate with Service Canada does not automatically gain authority to apply for a benefit, change your address, change direct deposit or request tax to be withheld. Representation rules are specific. If someone is helping you, confirm what Service Canada requires for the task you want that person to perform.

The annual renewal orbit

  1. 1. File.
File your income-tax return by April 30, even if you have little or no taxable income.
  2. 2. Recalculate.
Service Canada uses tax information to review GIS for the July-to-June benefit year.
  3. 3. Read.
A letter sent in July states whether GIS continues, stops or needs more information.
  4. 4. Correct.
Report errors or relevant household and income changes promptly.

GIS continuation is tied closely to annual tax filing. The Government of Canada warns that payments may stop or be reduced if the required tax return has not been filed. Filing by April 30 gives the system time to receive income information before the new payment year begins in July. Each spouse or common-law partner should file a return when required for the household calculation.

If Service Canada cannot calculate your benefit from tax data, it may send a renewal form. Return it by the stated deadline. Keep copies of the form, supporting documents and delivery confirmation. If you receive a request you do not understand, call the number published on the official Canada.ca GIS page rather than a number copied from an unsolicited message.

Changes that can move the dial

Retirement or pension reduction

If employment or pension income drops because you or your spouse retires or a pension is reduced, Service Canada may be able to estimate the current year’s income instead of relying only on the prior year. Contact the program; do not assume the adjustment is automatic.

Marriage, partnership or separation

Your category and combined-income threshold can change. Report a marriage, common-law relationship, separation, divorce or death. When a couple must live apart for reasons beyond their control, such as one partner entering long-term care, an involuntary-separation provision may affect the calculation.

Time outside Canada

GIS generally cannot continue indefinitely while you are outside Canada. Service Canada says payment may continue for six months after the month you leave, depending on the circumstances, and you must contact the program about departures longer than six months.

Address or banking change

Update your contact information so benefit notices reach you. Change direct deposit only through an official account or Service Canada channel. A returned letter or closed bank account can turn a routine update into a delayed-payment problem.

Income information is wrong

Compare the income and household details in your notice with your records. A tax reassessment can change the source information. Ask which documents are needed and whether the current payment will change while the review is underway.

A partner’s benefit changes

Whether a spouse or common-law partner receives OAS or the Allowance determines which GIS category applies. Report an approval, termination or other change rather than waiting for the next annual letter.

GIS and your income-tax return

GIS is described as tax-free, but it still appears on your tax information slip. The Canada Revenue Agency says the GIS amount is shown in box 21 of the T4A(OAS) and must be reported on line 14600. For most people it is then offset by a deduction on line 25000. The reporting step matters because the amount can still affect calculations based on net income.

Keep the T4A(OAS) with your tax records and give it to the person preparing your return. If the slip appears wrong, contact Service Canada about the benefit amount. If a tax return was assessed incorrectly, follow CRA’s correction process. The two organizations have different roles, and contacting the right one reduces unnecessary transfers.

What to do when a payment changes or stops

Begin with the notice. Look for the benefit period, household category, income year and reason. Then compare it with the latest tax assessment and any recent household change. A lower July payment may reflect the annual income review; an October, January or April change may reflect the quarterly adjustment. A stopped payment may signal missing information, a residence issue, an income level above the threshold or another eligibility change.

When you call, have your social insurance number, the letter, your most recent Notice of Assessment and relevant dates ready. Write down the agent’s name or identifier, the call date, what was decided and any deadline. Ask whether documents can be uploaded through My Service Canada Account and how to label them. Never send original documents unless the instructions specifically require them.

If you disagree with a decision, the letter should explain the reconsideration or review route and deadline. Act within that period even if you are still gathering records. Ask how to preserve the review date and submit additional evidence. Community legal clinics, seniors’ organizations and benefits navigators may help, but only Service Canada can make the federal benefit decision.

Build a clean document trail

Keep one folder for the current benefit year. Put the automatic-enrolment or decision letter, T4A(OAS), tax assessment, application or renewal form, and every Service Canada request in date order. Add a simple call log with the date, the official number called, the question, the answer and the promised next action. This is especially useful when one household change affects both partners or when a tax reassessment changes the income used in the calculation.

When you upload or mail a document, retain a copy and proof of delivery. Write your name and identifying reference only where the official instructions request it. Redacting a number the program needs can delay the review, while sending more personal information than requested creates unnecessary exposure. If a letter sets a deadline, submit the requested material through an accepted channel before that date or contact Service Canada to explain why you cannot.

Families helping an older adult should distinguish assistance from control. You can sit beside someone while they call, help organize documents or read a letter without taking over an account. For Service Canada to discuss a file with another person, formal consent or authority may be needed. Use the current federal authorization process and never share an account password, even with a trusted helper.

A five-minute GIS check

  1. Confirm that you receive OAS and identify your exact household category.
  2. Compare income with the current quarter’s official threshold, not an old screenshot.
  3. Check whether Service Canada automatically enrolled you or needs ISP-3025.
  4. File annual tax returns by April 30 and read the July benefit letter.
  5. Report retirement, separation, partner-status, address and absence changes promptly.
  6. Use official Canada.ca contact details for an individual estimate or decision.

Information note: Amounts in this guide are the federal rates published for July through September 2026 and may change in a later quarter. This is general benefit navigation, not legal, tax or financial advice. Service Canada determines eligibility and payment amounts.
